Food Allergy Awareness Week May 8 – 14, 2011 in Georgia

Recently Food Allergy Kids of Atlanta met with Governor Nathan Deal as he signed a proclamation announcing May 8 – 14, 2011 as Food Allergy Awareness Week in the state of Georgia.

This topic is close to my heart as my youngest daughter has food allergies. Every day we talk about them as her four year old mind is still processing it all. As she gets older, it is harder for her to deal with since she is realizing that she is a little bit different. Parties, holidays, restaurants, grocery stores, school cafeterias and any other food place have all become danger zones.

Our family has had to learn to read labels, ask questions and educate friends, family and caregivers. Hopefully one day there will be a cure, but until then, we accept it as part of our daily life. I am comforted by my daughter’s grace and bravery and I could not be prouder of her.

In honor of this week, I created a Storify for families with newly diagnosed food allergies. Cumming Patch has a great story about Forsyth County Schools and food allergies as well. Great resources are Kids with Food Allergies and FAAN. A local bakery, LaCupcakerie, also provides allergy-friendly baked items, which I am very excited about! They are also having a cupcake drive this week for FAAW.

I am thankful for my daughter’s caregivers, teachers, friends and family and how all they work every day to protect her. I am also thankful for the new nonprofit Food Allergy Kids of Atlanta for giving us a community. It really does take a village!
