Apple Pickin’ Jubilee at Hillcrest Orchards Starts September 8, 2012.

Trip to Hillcrest Orchards

One of our family’s favorite things to do is to go to North Georgia and pick apples. The weather is cooling off and the apple orchards are opening for business! Pack up a picnic basket and take your family to Ellijay, GA for the day!

Hillcrest Orchards debuts their apple pickin’ jubilee on September 8, 2012 and it runs through October. This is the only time that you can pick your own apples at this orchard. Pick your fun at the annual “Apple Pickin’ Jubilee” where you can pick your own apples, milk a cow, watch live pig races, walk a nature trail, visit the petting farm ($3.00 per person), take a wagon ride through the orchard, visit the Moonshine Museum and watch live bands and cloggers on the Hillcrest Stage. Visit the playground, fly on a zip line and ride our giant slide down the mountain. There is a new kids play area for extra fun. You can even get your picture made on one of their live steers. Jump for Joy in the Giant Jumping Pillow! Get Lost in the New Corny Kids’ Maze!

Visit the bakery and ice cream parlor for homemade fried apple pies, apple cider doughnuts, apple fritters, homemade ice cream and fudge. Wash it all down with some fresh cold apple cider. They will have the grill fired up outside in the festival area for hamburgers, hotdogs and barbecue along with Billy Bob’s famous boiled peanuts, turkey legs and roasted corn.

Hillcrest Orchards is open daily: 9:00am – 6:00pm (Sept. 8 – Oct.) Admission is $6.00 per person. Click here for directions and more information. Apple varieties: Golden & Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, Pinata, Ambrosia, Gala & Honey Crisp with more coming in. Pig races are at 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm & 4:30 pm each day of the festival.

Carrabba's Kids Menu

I am excited that Carrabba’s Italian Grill is coming to Forsyth County, GA! I attended a preview and was impressed with the authentic menu selection and fresh, homemade ingredients.

The grand opening of Carrabba’s in Forsyth County, GA is this Monday, August 20, 2012 at 4:00 pm. Join in on the fun and 50 percent of proceeds from opening night (up to $5,000) will go to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Forsyth. Enjoy a night of tasty home-cooked dining for a cause!

Carrabba’s has a colorful 6 page kids menu coloring booklet to keep the little ones occupied while dining. Kids can also play with pizza dough which is a neat way to keep their hands occupied while waiting for dinner! The kids meals are for kids 10 and under and cost $5.50 including beverage.

The kids menu offers something for everyone: grilled chicken, whole grain spaghetti, spaghetti and meatball, cheese or pepperoni pizza, cheese ravioli, chicken fingers. Buttered penne pasta or the veggie of the day can be substituted for any side.

If you sit at one of the nine the counter seats by the open kitchen, you are sure to be delighted with a show as all of the food is prepared from scratch in the wide open kitchen. The chefs joke with the crowd and even might offer samples.

The adult menu is full of traditional Italian fare and offers some items with a twist. Carrabba’s will be offering special menu items a few times a year.

Opening Night at Carrabba's Supports Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

Sampling:

These dishes that were sampled were delicious. Carrabba’s spends a lot of time preparing the sauces and dishes. There is a reason they are not open for lunch – they are making dinner for each night! The wood-fired grill is always on and something is always being prepared. There are no microwaves on the premises.

After a tour, we started with a samples of blackberry and peach sangria which are perfect summer cocktails. Then we sampled the following food:

Crab cakes – Jumbo lump crabmeat pan-seared to perfection with red bell pepper sauce.
Cozze in Bianco – Steamed mussels in white wine, basil, lemon butter sauce.
Calamari – with marinara sauce or spicy Italian pepper and lemon butter sauce.
Margherita pizza – fresh milk mozzarella and sundried tomato wood-fired pizza.
Tag Pic Pac – Tagliarini in Picchi Pacciu sauce with crushed tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and basil.
Messaluna – half moon ravioli stuffed with chicken, ricotta, spinach in tomato cream sauce.
Chicken Bryan – chicken topped with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and a basil lemon butter sauce
Pollo Rosa Maria – chicken stuffed with fontina and prosciutto, topped with mushrooms and a basil lemon butter sauce.

Dessert Rosa – named for the propietor’s mother, this delish dessert features a yellow cake with pineapple, custard, banana, icing and a chocolate strawberry on top.
Sogno Di Cioccolata “Chocolate Dream” – simply a chocolate lover’s dream dessert – layers upon layers of chocolate mousse, fudge brownie, fresh whipped cream, homemade chocolate sauce. (Note: the serving size of one dessert can easily feed 2 people or more!)

Needless to say, we were all full afterwards and enjoyed learning about the newest restaurant in our neighborhood. It felt like Thanksgiving Day!
