Weekend Events for Cumming, GA for October 19 – October 21, 2012.

save the horsesIt’s time to plan the weekend activities in Forsyth County, GA! Whether you are picking apples and viewing the leaves in North Georgia or venturing out to a festival, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Here’s a roundup of events in the area.

Friday, October 19

3:00 pm – 10:00 pm – Cumming Greek Festival- Saints Raphael Nicholas Irene Greek Orthodox Church, 3074 Bethelview Road, Cumming, GA 30040. Each year in October, an entertaining Greek village appears on the 15 acre property of Sts. Raphael, Nicholas and Irene off Bethelview Road in South Forsyth County. The scent and sounds of authentic Greek food and music will fill the air, creating a festive atmosphere. The event offers visitors a unique opportunity to share in the rich history of the Greek culture and it’s beautiful traditions. Period costumed Hellenic Dancers will perform various traditional Greek dances throughout the day and night of the two day event. Curious shops with art, jewelry, and other Aegean items will compliment the culinary offerings and entertainment. Traditional village cuisine will be served at the Greek restaurant, or Taverna. Wonderful Souvlaki (soov-ly-kee), Pastitsio (past-eet-sio), Gyros (ye-rrr-ohs) and other authentic food is also on the full menu. At another shop in the village, delicious, better than donuts, Loukoumades (loo-koo-mah-dez) will be cooked in front of you, then hand dipped in honey. Festival pastries, including Baklava (honey, clarified butter, puffed pastry layers) and much more will be explained and available in one of the many outdoor shops. A very fun kids play area will also be in the park-like setting plus traditional Greek coffee and liqueurs may be found at the Kafenion (cafe-neon).

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Sweet & Sassy at The Avenue Forsyth – Girls Night Out event. $25.00 per girl, reservations required. Hair, makeup, nails, pizza, limo ride, runway show, dancing, group picture.

Saturday, October 20

9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Rucker Pet Doggie Palooza – 3540 Keith Bridge Road, Cumming, GA. Lots of fun – dog show, vendors and more!

10:00 am – 12:00 pm – Michaels Halloween T-shirt event with purchase of a t-shirt. Ages 3 and up.

11:00 am – 5:00 pm – Red Door Festival at Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit on Pilgrim Mill Road. A fun festival with lots of food, music, inflatables, petting zoo and much more!

11:00 am – 10:00 pm – Cumming Greek Festival

11:00 am – 2:00 pm – Barnes & Noble at The Avenue Forsyth – Local Author Event. Barnes & Noble at The Avenue Forsyth is hosting a Local Author Celebration and Signing Event!  Need some new books for your kids? Come meet some fun, creative, and local authors. Click here for event flyer.

11:30 am – 4:00 pm – Annual Hay Day Event – Save the Horses – 1768 Newt Green Road, Cumming, GA – Benefit for Save the Horses. Pony rides, hay rides, petting zoo, face painting, crafts, games for kids, cake walk, plate lunches, baked goods, vendors and raffle prizes.

5:00 pm – Octoberfest at the Gasthaus! Food, fun, musical entertainment.

Sunday, October 21

11:30 am – 6:00 pm – Cumming Greek Festival

Octoberfest at the Gasthaus! Open All Sundays in October!! From 2pm to 5PM for a “German Picnic” Bratwurst, Knockwurst, German Potato Salad, Spatzel, Pretzels and the like. From 5pm to 9pm our regular dinner menu. Also Sunday Entertainment by Sherri and Larry a great duet that plays traditional German Music.

-Bratwurst eating competition Sunday Oct 14th

-Spatzle (German egg noodle) eating competition Sunday Oct 28th

-Sundays open at 2pm for German Picnic and live music, 5pm-9pm Dinner and live music.

NEARBY EVENTS

Dahlonega Gold Rush Days- Gold Rush Days are held the third weekend in October (the 20th and 21st for 2012), when thousands come to see fall colors peaking and celebrate Dahlonega’s 1828 discovery of gold. Over 300 art and craft exhibitors gather around the Public Square and Historic District in support of this annual event, and it is estimated that a crowd of over 200,000 visit over the weekend to join in the fun and excitement! It has been voted one of the Top 20 Events in the southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. Included in the two day event are a parade, children’s activities, a fashion show, gold panning contest, wheelbarrow race, King and Queen Coronation, hog calling, buck dancing contest, gospel singing and other live entertainment, wrist wrestling, and last but not least – some delicious food!

Hillcrest Orchards – Apple Pickin’ Jubilee begins September 8! Hillcrest Orchards is open daily: 9:00am – 6:00pm (Sept. 8 – Oct.) Admission is $6.00 per person. Click here for directions and more information. Apple varieties: Golden & Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, Pinata, Ambrosia, Gala & Honey Crisp with more coming in. Pig races are at 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm & 4:30 pm each day of the festival.

Burt’s Pumpkin Farm – 5 Burt’s Farm Rd Dawsonville, Georgia 30534. Hours will be from 9:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. The hayrides will be weekends only until October then the hayrides will be 7 days a week. Hayride cost: Adults $5.00, Kids 12 & under $4.00, infants 12 months and under free.

APPLE ORCHARDS/CORN MAZES/FARM FUN

It is the start of apple season and the orchards are opening!  Here is a directory of apple orchards and festivals in North Georgia. There are also corn mazes opening from Buford to Uncle Shuck’s to the North Georgia corn maze! Cagle’s Family Farm and Kinsey Family Farm are also fun-filled places to visit.
