Summer Reading Program at the Forsyth County Public Library

hampton park library

Hampton Park Library.

As we ease into a slower summer schedule, excitement about FCPL’s annual summer reading program is growing.  Children and their families will “Dig into Reading” this summer, while tweens and teens will experience “Groundbreaking Reads.”  Adults will get a chance to be a part of the fun as well, with a special program geared toward them.

Studies show that reading during school vacation helps maintain and even improve reading skills. The summer reading program is a powerful tool that parents can use to help ensure their children read during the summer months, which will also help prevent an academic summer slip.

Summer reading registration begins on Friday, May 24, 2013 for children, teens, and adults. Patrons may simply visit the library’s website to register or may visit any of the three library branches.
Children and teens will be encouraged to set a reading goal for the summer when they register for the programs. They may record their progress throughout the summer online or by using a free reading log they will receive at registration. Children and teens will have until Saturday, August 24 to meet their reading goals and to claim their rewards. Each child or teen who meets his or her summer reading goal will receive a free paperback book, donated by the Forsyth County Public Library Friends & Advocates.
Adults who register for summer reading will automatically be entered to win a Sony eReader. They will also be able to record their reading online all summer long.  The winner for the eReader will be drawn on Saturday, August 24.
Also check out the Forsyth County Public Library’s events calendar for lots of fun free things to do this summer. The FCPL offers story times, magic shows, free movies and much more.
Dynamic Diggers schedule – Storytime for children, ages 2-6, with an adult. Enjoy 20-25 minutes of short, colorful books, stories, music, puppet shows, and movement. Advance registration is not required to attend.
Excellent Explorers schedule – Storytime for children, ages 4-8.  Excellent Explorers lasts 30 minutes and the programs feature longer picture books and word games as well as music, puppet shows, and movement. Advance registration is not required to attend.
FCPL Summer Family Cinema series – Free movies on Wednesdays at 10:30 am at Hampton Park Library.

READING.  PIZZA.  SUMMER.
WHAT KID COULD ARGUE WITH THAT?

“We’re parents just like you.  We want our kid to love reading, and we encourage the growth of her literacy at home in many ways.  We’re so excited to help parents encourage a love of reading by offering free pizza to kids who read six books and complete our simple pizza slice reading log.

All kids who participate are also entered into a drawing for a family meal that includes a 3-topping pizza, a large garden salad, and four fountain drinks or teas.

We want to reward you parents who work so hard to instill a love of learning in your kids, even in the off months.   Grab a printable copy of the log at our website.

Kids must be 12 or under. Books must be age appropriate. Can’t combine with other promotions or offers. Promotion runs between June 22 and August 8, 2013.
