Back to School Deals and School Supply Shopping Tips 2013

backtosch Believe it or not, we have two full weeks of summer left in Forsyth County!

My panic first set in this weekend when I received the Target back to school catalog.

My family and I were finally embracing these slower summer days in Georgia when this catalog from the near future appeared in our mailbox showing kids fashionably dressed, happily going back to school.

It rattled me out of my summertime slumber as I ran to check the calendar. Two and a half weeks. We are still okay.

I went to Target later for groceries and the checkout lady was telling me that it was a madhouse that morning for school supplies. My panic meter started to spike. Am I the only one who waits until August to buy school supplies?

I set out to research the school supply landscape and see if I could get some shopping help and coupons along the way. It seems that Time Magazine noticed this early onslaught of back to school marketing as well. Back to school shopping is second only to the holiday shopping season and it seems to start earlier every year.

I found Coupon Project’s very informative post “Best Prices for Back to School Supplies and 2013 Shopping Tips.” Her research of school supply deals over the past few years confirms that most deals occur in August (phew.)

In her brilliance, Angela compiled a great printable list of best prices for school supplies. Angela also created a spreadsheet that compares prices at many retail and office supply stores that will be sure to save time and money! She also had a great idea to restock your home office supplies and buy extra supplies to donate to a school of your choice.

Georgia’s back to school tax holiday is August 9 and 10, 2013. The best items to buy are the big ticket electronics items if you have students going to college or needing technology for school. Mashable has a nice technology roundup of back to school deals.

As for back to school clothing? We have great consignment stores as well as retail stores in Forsyth County, GA. The Collection Forsyth has a Back to School Shopping Event this weekend on Saturday, July 27 from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm. North Georgia Premium Outlets is having various summer clearance sales and a back to school preview.

On the consignment side, Hut No. 8 recently opened in Johns Creek, GA for tween and teen brand name clothing fashions. Kid to Kid Cumming is a great resource for elementary and preschool aged play clothes.

Passion for Savings and Retail Me Not has a round up of back to school clothing sales, deals and discounts – check back for updates.

What are your favorite back to school deal sites? Where do you shop? Most importantly, how do you cope?

Happy shopping!

How to Select the BEST Childcare and Preschool Option – A Parent’s Guide

primrose school education expert

Kristin Lauria, Director of Education for Primrose School of Christopher Robin.

Parents will agree, selecting the right Child Care/ Preschool can be agonizing. Research tells us that children’s brains are rapidly developing between infancy and age 5. A child’s healthy development depends on positive, engaging experiences during these early years of life.

The first step is to know your options. Ask family, friends, coworkers and your pediatrician to recommend local high-quality programs. Visit each school’s website to learn more about their programs.

Your first impressions are extremely important. Many parents say they know immediately when a school has the “right” feel. How were you and your child greeted? Did the school smell good? Was the staff able to answer all of your questions?

Getting to personally know the people at the school is critical-will these individuals partner with you as a parent?

Here are five topics to help determine if a school is a good fit for you and your family.

Education goals and philosophy: What education philosophies and practices does the school use to guide instruction? Does the curriculum reflect what is known about child development and preparing them for the transition into elementary school?

Accreditation: Accreditation means that a school is held accountable by an outside agency to adhere to research based quality standards.

Teacher Qualifications: What are the training requirements for teachers? Is there ongoing professional development for teachers? Art teachers certified in first aid and CPR?

Learning Environment: When visiting the school or center, observe the children around you. What is the atmosphere of the classroom? Are the children engaged in organized activities? Do the children look happy? Are teachers responding to the children and talking with them, not at them? And note if the schedule is posted outside or inside of the classroom.

Center Policies: What are the school’s policies related to safety and parent communications? What would happen if your child becomes sick? What are the payment options?

The care and education that children receive early in life is crucial to their development and serves as a foundation for their future success. There are many different child care and preschool options, so keep searching until you find the one that meets your requirements and feels right for your family.

Primrose School of Christopher RobinPrimrose School of Christopher Robin is an accredited private preschool that provides a premier educational child care experience. The Leader in Educational Child Care®, we partner with parents to help children build the right foundation for future learning and life. Our goal is to help children have fun while building Active Minds, Healthy Bodies and Happy Hearts®.

Please join us for our National Open House Event on Saturday, July 20th 10am-2pm.

Pick Your Own Sunflowers in Forsyth County, GA

the anderson's sunflower farm in cumming, gaOne of our favorite traditions is picking sunflowers at The Anderson Family sunflower farm in South Forsyth at Highway 9 and Shiloh Road (near Majors Road).

Due to the rain this year, the sunflowers are not yet in bloom. The Andersons report that they hope to open at the end of July 2013 for the sunflower picking season.

You can pick your own or buy from the stand. It also makes a great background for family photos. I drove by for years when going to work and I am really glad I finally stopped! Now it is a tradition for the girls and I to visit the sunflowers, take pictures and pick their favorites!

The Anderson’s Sunflowers is now on Facebook as well. Please check their FB page for updates.

The sunflower farm is located at 3360 Shiloh Road, Cumming, GA 30040. They are open 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week while they are in bloom!
