Pumpkin Patch at Cumming First United Methodist Church Open October 2013

cfumc pumpkin patchThe Pumpkin Patch at Cumming First United Methodist Church is now open at 770 Canton Highway, Cumming, GA. The pumpkin patch will be open will be open from 9 a.m. to dark Saturdays, 11 a.m. to dark Sundays and 1 p.m. to dark Monday-Fridays throughout the month of October.

Pick up your pumpkins and gourds for Fall decorating.  Proceeds go to support children’s and youth ministries at Cumming First UMC and within the local community.

CFUMC will have story time in the pumpkin patch beginning October 8th on Tuesdays – Thursdays. Schools, clubs and groups are welcome – please call 770-887-2900 x 220 to make reservations.

Mark your calendars for October 26, 2013 for “The Great Pumpkin – Carving A Night of Fun” from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The event, which costs $10 per family, will include a hot dog supper, s’mores and popcorn. There also will be a “punkin chunkin” contest, jack-o-lantern carving, hayrides and a viewing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” on an inflatable, outdoor screen.

APPLE ORCHARDS / CORN MAZES / FARMS IN NORTH GEORGIA

It is the start of apple season and the orchards are opening!  Here is a directory of apple orchards and festivals in North Georgia. Hillcrest Orchards also debuts their apple pickin’ jubilee on September 7, 2013 and it runs every weekend through October. This is the only time that you can pick your own apples at this orchard. Pick your fun at the annual “Apple Pickin’ Jubilee” where you can pick your own apples, milk a cow, watch live pig races, walk a nature trail, visit the petting farm ($3.00 per person), take a wagon ride through the orchard, visit the Moonshine Museum and watch live bands and cloggers on the Hillcrest Stage. Hillcrest Orchards is open daily: 9:00am – 6:00pm (Sept. – Oct.) 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Nov.) Cagle’s Family Farm in Canton, GA opens Labor Day weekend! Fall fun at the farm starts this weekend. Enjoy their 13th annual corn maze and lots of kid friendly activities. There is also a haunted barn opening Oct. 4 – Nov. 2 for older folks. Open weekends from August 30 through November 17th. Hours are as follows:

Trunk or Treat Safety Event at Coal Mountain Park on October 26, 2013

Bring the whole family and have fun while learning how to stay safe this Halloween during the fourth annual Trunk or Treat Safety Event. The event will be held at Coal Mountain Park on Saturday, October 26, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 p.m. Admission is one bag of candy per family.

Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the family-friendly Trunk or Treat, which will feature a haunted maze, bean bag toss, face painting, clowns and other fun activities and games. There will also be information on costume safety, pedestrian safety, stranger danger, Stop-Drop-Roll demonstrations, and more.

“Trunk or Treat is a fun event, but is also an opportunity to share with families important safety information surrounding Halloween activities,” said Fire Chief Danny Bowman. “Forsyth County’s public safety personnel pride themselves on providing engaging ways to promote safety to our community’s youth.”

While safety remains the focus of the event, the Forsyth County Fire Department is also inviting local businesses and non-profit organizations to participate. Those desiring to participate must sign up by Friday, October 4. There are two ways to participate ­– by having a trunk, where candy is handed out to children from the decorated trunk of a vehicle, or by having a booth, where a free interactive activity or giveaway is available for children in attendance. Community Wide Garage Sale! Windermere Community has 14 neighborhoods participating in this community-wide garage sale on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Many homes will be participating. We are located off Buford Rd. Hwy 20 (east of 400N). From 400 northbound, exit #14 ,take right, travel approx 2 miles (to Trammel Rd) or 4 miles (to Windermere Pkwy) and take right. Maps will be located at the Windermere Lodge Clubhouse at address above. Each participating neighborhood and home will have a yellow sign in front. Come rain or shine.

Kinsey Family Farm Fall Pumpkin Season 2013

Fall pumpkin season is here! For years we have been going to Kinsey Family Farm in Forsyth County, GA to pick out our annual pumpkin.

The farm features hayrides, barn animals and catfish to feed in the pond among other fun things. There are picnic tables if you would like to bring a picnic lunch. Sample their caramel apples or boiled peanuts. They also have a 25,000 square foot nursery and during the holidays you can pick out a Christmas tree and enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows.

The farm is open every day in October and features a wide variety of pumpkins as well as apples, gourds, corn stalks, indian corn, straw bales, and much more!

Check out their fall harvest shop and pick up some apples, salsa, jam, honey, preserves and much more!

Hayrides, fish feeding, pumpkins and fall harvest crops. There is also a brand new animal pavilion so you can feed the farm animals! Hayrides during the week happen at the top of the hour – there are field trips in the morning as well. Check their fall activity list for more information.

We also had our daughter’s birthday party there in the picnic area and it was a wonderful time. We took a hayride, fed the catfish and then picked out small pumpkins and decorated them.

Book Drive & Literacy Event at Mia’s Pizza and Eats on September 23, 2013

mias pizza and eats reading eventMia’s Pizza and Eats, is sponsoring a community book drive through September 23, 2013 to benefit Literacy Forsyth and Isabelle’s Book Club, two Cumming based non-profits dedicated to improving literacy in the Forsyth community.

Additionally, Mia’s will host a “Reading Is So Delicious” celebration night on the evening of  Monday, September 23 from five to seven pm, with kids’ crafts, door prizes, and a heavily discounted menu to all who donate books that night.

Five local authors have also joined the celebration and will read and sign their books that evening:  Anna Lee Everhart, author of Beautiful Bear and His New Moves; Ann Linn, author of Drowsy Eels on Banana Peels; Priscilla Whitaker, author of Mr. Blue; Jackie Gaskins, author of The Four Princesses; and Randy Hardin, author of many books, including The Kudzu Monsters.

The organizations have requested new and gently used books, especially K-12 level.  Folks can drop off their new or used books at Mia’s Pizza and Eats on 911 Market Place Boulevard or at the Forsyth Family Center on 133 Samaratin Drive.

Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival on September 14, 2013 at Lake Lanier Olympic Venue

atlanta dragon boat festival in gainesville, gaThis year’s Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival is on Saturday, September 14, 2013 and will take place at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue in Gainesville, GA.
The dragon boat itself is a spectacle to behold. The slim, 39-foot teakwood racer (and fiberglass models) is crafted today in only a handful of boat-yards in Hong Kong. Distinguished by a fierce-looking dragon’s head at the prow and a tail at the stern, traditional dragon boats require thirty days, three craftsmen, and years of practice to produce.

1996 Olympic Venue at Lake Lanier offers an absolutely beautiful background for all of the activities. Which allows the patrons to enjoy a full day of festivities and jam packed fun. Our event which is regarded as one of the premier cultural, diversity events in the Atlanta area.

Activities commence with races beginning at 7 am and the colorful Opening Ceremonies at noon. The race has grown from a handful of teams and a few spectators to an event which is one of the hallmark diversity events in the metro Atlanta area. The event now boasts a field of more than 50 teams with over 5,000 spectators and a wide variety of Chinese artisans either performing or displaying their wares.

APPLE ORCHARDS / CORN MAZES / FARMS IN NORTH GEORGIA

It is the start of apple season and the orchards are opening!  Here is a directory of apple orchards and festivals in North Georgia. There are also corn mazes opening from Buford to Uncle Shuck’s to the North Georgia corn maze! Cagle’s Family Farm and Kinsey Family Farm are also a fun-filled place to visit.

Hillcrest Orchards also debuts their apple pickin’ jubilee on September 7, 2013 and it runs every weekend through October. This is the only time that you can pick your own apples at this orchard. Pick your fun at the annual “Apple Pickin’ Jubilee” where you can pick your own apples, milk a cow, watch live pig races, walk a nature trail, visit the petting farm ($3.00 per person), take a wagon ride through the orchard, visit the Moonshine Museum and watch live bands and cloggers on the Hillcrest Stage.

Hillcrest Orchards is open daily: 9:00am – 6:00pm (Sept. – Oct.) 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Nov.) Admission is $7.00 per person. Click here for directions and more information. Cagle’s Family Farm in Canton, GA opens Labor Day weekend! Fall fun at the farm starts this weekend. Enjoy their 13th annual corn maze and lots of kid friendly activities. There is also a haunted barn opening Oct. 4 – Nov. 2 for older folks. Open weekends from August 30 through November 17th. Hours are as follows:

Grand Opening for the National Guard Armory in Cumming, GA on September 14, 2013

national guard armory cumming gaThe City of Cumming, Georgia Army National Guard and The 560th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade invited you to attend The Cumming Regional Readiness Center Grand Opening.

This community event for the National Guard Armory is scheduled for September 14th from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

There will be a parachute experience, air soft firing range, rock climbing wall, night vision goggle experience, sending messages from communications vehicles, a pottery station, air brush face painting, bouncy house, food and lots more.

There will also be numerous room dedications as well as the Mayor speaking at the Ribbon Cutting ceremony.

Come out in force to support our men and women in uniform! This event is free to attend and will be lots of fun for everyone! Located at: 100 Aquatic Circle, Cumming, GA 30040, off Pilgrim Mill Road.
