The A – Z Of Homeschooling Resources In Georgia

Homeschooling in GeorgiaHomeschooling is growing seven times faster than public school enrollment. A report in Education News states that, since 1999, the number of children who are homeschooled has increased by 75%.

I have a few friends homeschooling their children and I asked them for a few resources to help those families just starting out. Here is a list of homeschooling resources in Georgia.

Here is some information and resources for homeschooling in and around Forsyth County, GA.

GROUPS:

DaFHE (Dawson and Forsyth Home Educators) – http://dafhe.wordpress.com/ –
dues are $20/year per family.  You can do a trial membership and attend 3
activities before committing to join and pay dues.  This group is about
60-70 families.  The activities are intended to include the whole family,
with kids of all ages.  They have 1 activity per week that rotates between
PE, various classes, field trips, mom’s meetings, mom’s night out and
service projects.

FCHE (Forsyth Christian Home Educators) – www.fche.org – dues are $35/year
per family.  This group has close to 300 families.  They offer a lot of
events including field trips, patriotic events, science fair, history fair,
literature fair, geography fair, Parent’s Night Out, Talent Show, parties,
prom/formal for high schoolers, and a very large co-op that meets once a
week.  Most of their activities are divided by grade level: K-2, 3-5, middle
school, high school.  Usually siblings of any age are welcome at all events.

ONLINE SCHOOLS:

Georgia Connections Academy (GACA) – http://connectionsacademy.com/

Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA) – www.k12.com/gca

Both of these are online public charter schools.  So they are public
schools, funded by tax dollars, and free to attend.  At the beginning of the
year, you receive a box of materials that includes textbooks, workbooks,
DVDs, art supplies, science tools and math manipulatives.  You have a login
to their online curriculum where you receive assignments each day for each
of the subject areas.  A parent teaches at home and helps the child with
assignments.  Each student is assigned a teacher with the online school.
The teacher provides some lessons via webcam and a chat room.  Some of the
assignments are scanned and turned into the teacher.  Most of the work is
graded at home by the parent.  Parents are provided with answer keys for the
assignments.

ONLINE CURRICULUM SITES:
They provide a complete curriculum by grade.  (Several of them are free, but you may have to buy textbooks.)

curriculum, and teachers assign the work that will be completed at home with
a parent.

Things to Do on a Snow Day Inside with Kids

snow dayThe hardest part of a snow day is having projects and activities for the kids to do inside in between playing in the snow outside.

Here are some ideas of things to do on a snow day inside.

  • Hit the recycle bin – don’t throw away any cardboard during a snow day! My kids are making Valentine’s Day mailboxes with Coke 12-pack cardboard boxes. Just cover them with construction paper, decorate with stickers, crayon and glitter glue. We also have a large box that they converted into a puppet theater. Or you can convert the stairs into a slide with cardboard!
  • Make something in the kitchen – grab a favorite recipe and get the kids cooking and baking with you. It’s also a great way to learn fractions!
  • Have a fashion show – get all gussied up and have a fashion show or tea party.
  • Have a family game night. Break out the board games, a deck or cards or puzzles and have a family game night. Have each family member choose the next game/activity.
  • Build a fort. Grab some sheets and make a fort in your family room or the kids bedrooms.
  • Put on a talent show. Have a family talent show and everyone comes up with an act.
  • Read a book. Sit on the sofa and read a book out loud together.
  • Make up a game or play one of these indoor games for kids.
  • Draw cartoons or portraits.
  • Learn how to make shadow puppets. (check my Pinterest page)
  • Go on a scavenger hunt. Make a list of things to find in the house and send the kids searching.
  • Have an indoor picnic.
  • Watch old movies and musicals and have a family movie night.
  • Write letters to family and friends.
  • Make a scrapbook or photo album.
  • Roast marshmallows in the fireplace and make s’mores.
  • Have an indoor olympics or play minute to win it with household items like marshmallows and paper cups.

For more ideas, check out my Pinterest pages for Kid Stuff and Printables.

Winter Storm Safety Checklist

snow angelsIt’s hard to believe that another winter storm watch is in effect for the metro Atlanta area. This storm also shows the potential for ice, which scares me more than snow.

Here are some helpful winter storm safety resources and checklists. The best thing we can do is to be prepared.

This winter weather checklist is a great starting point for making sure you have a communications plan for your family, plans for heating, cooking and lighting, food and safety, water and a car and emergency checklist.

The American Red Cross has helpful resources in all kinds of emergencies. Here is a PDF of a winter storm safety checklist and a power outage checklist. Ready.gov has a basic disaster supply kit checklist.

  • Create an emergency preparedness kit with at least a three day supply of non-perishable food and water for your home and office. Kits prepared for vehicle road travel and winter weather evacuation kits are also advised.
  • Make sure your vehicle is full of gas and that you have a blanket, flashlight, snacks and other items for an emergency kit. Kitty litter can help gain traction if your vehicle gets stuck in icy/snow conditions.
  • Make sure your health prescriptions are replenished if they are running low.
  • In the event of power outages, have a plan.
  • Make a communications plan and practice the plan with your family and those who depend on you.
  • Stay informed and know the weather approaching so you are prepared for anything.
