City of Cumming Recreation and Parks Spring and Summer Guide 2014

cityofcumminggaThe City of Cumming, GA has posted the Spring and Summer Guide 2014. Classes and summer camps include aerobics and fitness, art, dance, gymnastics, music, basketball, tennis, martial arts, drama and more.

The Recreation Department staff encourages everyone to come the take part in the activities and programs of the Cumming Recreation and Parks Department.

Take some time to learn new hobbies, develop new skills, create new interests and make new friends through the recreational opportunities offered.

Cumming Aquatic Center Outdoor Leisure Pool Summer 2014 Schedule

cumming aquatic centerThe Cumming Aquatic Center is preparing for its opening in May 2014. It is one of our favorite places to go in the summer. We get a monthly pass and it is much more convenient and better on our budget!

The Cumming Aquatic Center is a great place to learn to swim, join a swim team, take swim lessons and exercise classes and have a birthday party!

The Outdoor Leisure Pool will be open the following hours during late Spring and Summer:

MAY 3RD – MAY 18TH, 2014 (WEEKENDS ONLY)

Saturdays & Sundays:  1 session from 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

MAY 24TH – AUGUST 6TH, 2014 (DAILY)

Monday through Saturday:  2 sessions from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm / 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Sundays:  1 session from 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

*Please note that separate admission is required for each session. 

AUGUST 9TH – SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2014 (WEEKENDS ONLY)

On behalf of Northside Hospital-Forsyth and Bluegrass Materials Company, we hope you enjoy the race course, event venues and Spring Fling post-race activities. Race starts at 9:00 am. 9:00 am – 2:00 pm – Hike for Hyde – Sawnee Mountain Preserve Park at 4075 Spot Road  Cumming, GA 30040. This event benefits the Foundation for Children with Atypical HUS (80%) and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (20%).

8:00 and 10:00 am – Pike Nursery Beneficial Bug Class. Some bugs like the praying mantis, hoverflies, and ladybugs are good for your plants. Join us for a free class to learn what insects are beneficial to your garden.

That is what you will find at the Bill Thomas Raceway located at the Cumming Fairgrounds, home of the North Georgia Quarter Midget Racing Association (NGQMA). Saturdays between March and November, you will find boys and girls, ages 5-16, take to the track, pedal to the metal. Race on over for some wheel to wheel action!  Admisison is always free and concessions are available.

Recycle Electronics Event on May 3, 2014

kfcbOne of the hardest things to do is recycle electronics items. I never know where to go or who to call. If you have any items that you need to get rid of, this event is perfect for helping you clean house in a green way.

Accepted items include computers, stereos, cell phones and more

Forsyth County residents will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment by recycling their old, unused electronics during the upcoming electronics recycling event hosted by Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB). The event will be held on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cumming Fairgrounds’ parking lot 3 off of Castleberry Road.

Accepted items for recycling include laptops, stereos, CD players, cell phones, microwaves, cameras and more. The minimum donation per carload drop-off is $5 while an additional $20 fee will apply for each television.

“There is always a great turnout for our electronics recycling events,” Environmental Program Manager Tammy Wright said. “By taking the time to recycle their unused electronics, residents can make a positive impact on the environment while removing clutter from their homes.”

Some items, such as large wooden console televisions, projector televisions, toaster ovens and refrigerators, will not be accepted during the event. For a complete list of acceptable and non-acceptable items, visit www.forsythco.com or call KFCB at 770.205.4573.

10:00 am – 12:00 pm – Michaels Kids Club – Works of whimsy! Kids, create an original painting on canvas. Join us on Saturday, April 5th, for our Whimsical Works of Art Event. Ages 3 and up are welcome to this event. Let your kids explore their creativity while you shop! Only $2.00 per child reserves 30 minutes for your creative kid. 10:00 am – Pike Nurseries Class – Garden experts will host a Growing Great Tomatoes seminar. Participants will learn key planting and care tips as well as the many tomato varieties that are best suited for their garden.

11:00 am – Barnes & Noble story time. It’s bath time, and Pigeon won’t go willingly! Join us April 5 at 11:00 am for a reading of The Pigeon Needs a Bath!, followed by more stories and pigeon activities.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm – Post Road Library Saturday Family Story Time and visit with Curious George. Start your weekend off right at the Post Road library. We’ll have stories, dancing, and fun! This storytime is for children aged 4-8 but bring the whole family!

11:15 am – 11:45 am – Saturday Story Time at Cumming Library. This storytime includes books, music, and activities. It is designed for ages 4 – 8, but the whole family is welcome to attend.

2:00 pm – Pike Nurseries Class – Grow Your Own Salsa Garden class, where gardeners and at-home chefs alike learn not only how to grow all of the ingredients for salsa, but also how to use their harvest in a custom recipe! Whether customers prefer heirloom tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, Pike Nurseries always offers fresh advice for harvesting homegrown tomatoes – ripe for the picking!

2:15 pm – Meet Curious George at the Sharon Forks Library! He’s coming to the library!  Enjoy a special storytime honoring our favorite curious monkey and then meet the one, the only, Curious George!  Be sure to bring your camera for a photo with him, too. All ages. No registration required.

Sunday, April 6

2:30 pm – 5:00 pm – Forsyth County Senior Services Spring Concert for all ages at the Sexton Hall Enrichment Center, 2115 Chloe Road in Cumming. The Sounds of Sawnee Concert Band will perform as part of the ongoing concert series hosted by Senior Services. The cost is $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Refreshments are included in the concert admission price.

Multi-Family Yard Sale – Donut Connection parking lot. Come check out our vast array of items. At least 4 families are bringing treasures to sell. Lots of household items, clothing, books, record albums mainly from the 70s, cookbooks, tools, children items, knick knacks and much more. Opening at noon on Friday April 4th. Saturday, April 5th we will be opening at 8am. Will be set up in the gravel parking lot at Donut Connection on Keith’s Bridge Road in Cumming. Hope to see you there!!

4:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Coo Coo’s Nest 2nd Annual Open House. Kids eat free! Half priced appetizers from 4 pm – 7 pm.
