The new experiences, friendships and opportunities at the beginning of the school year provide a natural platform for children to learn about how they are the same and different than their classmates.
Ellen Galinsky, president and co-founder of the Families and Work Institute, work life researcher, former NAEYC president, and parenting book author, defines perspective-taking as an essential life skill that involves putting aside one’s own thoughts and feelings in order to understand how someone else perceives the world.
In her book, Mind in the Making, Galinsky explains that young children who learn this broader view adjust to kindergarten faster, as they are better at anticipating their teachers’ expectations. These children also have more developed conflict resolution skills than their peers who have not yet learned how to take the perspective of others.
“As our society becomes more diverse, it is essential that our children learn to respect the perspectives of those around them,” said Kim Musso, Franchise Owner, Primrose School of Alpharetta East. Skills like understanding other people’s perspectives translate into later life experiences and prepare children for the world outside our classrooms.”
These are life lessons that parents should begin teaching their children at an early age. Providing them with these social skills will help children develop important character traits like appreciation for others and empathy, reinforcing an understanding of their own cultures as well as the different backgrounds of their peers.
Since September 11, 2001, at Primrose Schools across Atlanta, the entire month of September is dedicated to Celebrating Cultures. Our teachers help children develop these important life skills in a fun and meaningful way by learning about heritages, sports, animals and music from around the world.
Encourage your children to learn more about other cultures and remind them that while we may look different, come from different backgrounds and have different family environments, we really are all the same but, with a uniqueness of our own.
