spring break events at forsyth county librariesLIBRARIES OFFER FREE SPRING BREAK FUN FOR KIDS AND TEENS

If you’re planning a staycation for spring break, make sure your plans include the Forsyth County Public Library. With more than three dozen programs and events on the calendar for kids and teens – plus a few more activities for grownups – you’re sure to find something to keep the family entertained.

Author & Illustrator Visit

Joey Weiser, author and illustrator of the Mermin graphic novels and contributor to SpongeBob Comics, will read an excerpt from his work and give a drawing demonstration to students in grades 3 through 6. The event will be held at the Hampton Park Library on Wednesday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. and advance registration is requested.

Movie Screenings

Come to the library and watch a movie on the big screen in surround sound. See Disney’s Winnie the Pooh (2011, Rated G) at the Cumming Library at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4. Bring your own little minions to the Minions (2015, Rated PG) Movie Parties at the Post Road Library on Wednesday, April 6 at 1:15 p.m. or the Sharon Forks Library on Thursday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. Fans of Peter Pan should bring a picnic lunch, blankets, and pillows to the Post Road Library at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, April 8 for the Pan (2015, Rated PG) Family Movie Picnic.

Character Visits, Animals, and Puppet Shows

Beloved children’s book character Pete the Cat will appear at each library branch during spring break for “I Like My Stories: A Groovy Pete the Cat Storytime.” We’ll read Pete stories, sing songs, make cat-tastic crafts, and even enjoy a visit from the famous cat! Pete the Cat will appear at the Cumming Library on April 7, at the Hampton Park Library and the Sharon Forks Library on April 8, and at the Post Road Library on April 9.

Love butterflies? There are two opportunities to learn all about them this month! First visit the Post Road Library on Monday, April 4 at 11:15 a.m. for “Monarchs and Milkweed” to get a preview of the library’s Monarch caterpillar enclosure and learn about their life cycle and migration. Elementary-aged students can also make a butterfly craft and plant butterfly-friendly seeds in the library’s garden. Then, visit the Hampton Park Library throughout the month of April to watch a group of caterpillars transform into butterflies.

Go “Batty About Bats” as you meet different species of bats and learn about their habitats with wildlife educator Vicky Beckham Smith. The program will be held on Monday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon Forks Library and at 2:30 p.m. at the Hampton Park Library.

Puppetpalooza, an over-the-top series of puppet shows, will also be held at each library branch throughout the week.

Touch a Truck & More Family Fun

Trucks and other vehicles from the Forsyth County Fire Department and Sawnee EMC will be on display for kids of all ages at the Post Road Library on Tuesday, April 5 from 1:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. After exploring the vehicles, stop inside the library to make a things-that-go craft.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will also visit the Cumming Library on Monday, April 4 at 3:15 p.m. to discuss Stranger Danger with kids ages 4 to 8.

Crafty kids ages 9 to 12 can learn to crochet and knit some simple, colorful projects to keep at Kids Crochet at the Cumming Library on Tuesday, April 5 at 2:00 p.m. Elementary school students in grades 3 through 5 should stop by the Cumming Library again on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. to make a disaster preparedness kit with the American Red Cross’s Pillowcase Project sponsored by Disney.

Like Minute to Win It? Bring your game face and see if you can do wacky stunts like balancing a stack of dice on a popsicle stick at the Minute to Win It Challenge at the Sharon Forks Library at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.

The library will remain open on a regular schedule during Forsyth County School’s spring break. Digital materials, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, music, and videos, are available to library cardholders 24/7 in the eLibrary.
