Lake Lanier Islands – A Family Staycation

We usually go to the beach in the summer, but this year we opted to go to Lake Lanier Islands for a closer and cheaper alternative. There is a family fun package at the Legacy Lodge and Conference Center that includes a night at the hotel, buffet breakfast and two days at the waterpark. We went on a Sunday night and it was $199.00. A typical night is priced at $189.00 – that was a great deal! The price varies during the week and is listed now starting at $219.00 a night, but it is still a great deal.

We went over by boat and stayed overnight on Father’s Day. There had been a storm the night before and the docks by Sunset Cove were broken. We ended up parking at another dock on the other side and walked up to the entrance of the water park. We called the hotel and the hotel shuttle picked us up and took us to the hotel.

Check in wasn’t until 3:00 pm, so we checked our bags and went to the pool. They have a nice sized pool and Bullfrogs restaurant with a porch so you can sit poolside. The menu outside is limited. Inside the restaurant there was live music, game tables like checkers and a full menu.

The kids played in the pool and we had sandwiches for lunch. My husband and I split a club sandwich and that was filling. Then we went exploring. In the hotel, there are a few games in the hallways like a pool table and foozball. We played games for a bit and then were able to check in. The rooms have been renovated and although the building is older, our room was clean and the bathroom had the latest amenities.

We decided to go to Sunset Cove for dinner and walk around the water park. We were going to go to the water park on Monday when it wasn’t as crowded. The beach was crowded and there were many boats in the cove. Sunset Cove is open to boaters as well as water park visitors, so it was a mixed crowd of families and boaters. Dinner was average and the view and outdoor dining was pleasant.

We headed back to the hotel via shuttle – you just give them a call and they will pick you up at the entrance of the park. We went to the hotel to settle for the night. I put our youngest daughter to bed and my husband took our oldest daughter swimming. We always have fond memories of night swimming on summer vacation and it was fun to see her excitement as they got to swim at night.

The next morning we had a wonderful buffet breakfast at the Windows Restaurant at Legacy Lodge. It had everything from omelets to egg benedict, oatmeal and yogurt to biscuits and grits. It wasn’t crowded since it was a Monday morning. We heard it was packed for Father’s Day brunch the day before!

We packed up and headed out to the water park. It was exciting this year as our youngest daughter was finally tall enough to ride on all the water slides! We spent a few hours on the water slides and in the wave pool and then packed up our boat and drove home. It was a fun way to celebrate Father’s Day while being on a budget!

Here are some other deals to save some cash at Lake Lanier Islands. Like them on Facebook and get discounts on Lanier World (new web site) online ticket purchases. Find a friend with a season pass and go along with them on half price days – friends can get 50% off on certain days. Look for coupons at Chick-fil-A and other places for LanierWorld and get $5.00 of per pass.

Playing in Fountains within 30 Minutes of Forsyth County, GA

We first visited the fountain at Mall of Georgia and have since ventured out to Suwanee Town Center Park and Playtown as well as Duluth Town Green in Duluth, GA.

These three locations are wonderful places to visit within 30 minutes of home. Pack a picnic, swimsuit and a change of clothes and off you go!

Playtown is a shady playground and the town center has lots of space for picnics as well as shops and restaurants. Duluth Town Green has shady areas, benches and swings, a playground and surrounding shops and restaurants that make it inviting for an afternoon. Add to these places their events calendars and concerts, art shows and the like are also bringing people to these wonderful parks.

Play in the Fountains – Near Forsyth County, GA

We had to drop our Kia off at the Buford, GA dealer for maintenance. They were very friendly and took my girls and I to the Mall of Georgia to spend a few hours instead of waiting in a cramped waiting room.

At the Mall, I was pleasantly surprised to find an open area play space that the girls played in for a few minutes while we waited for the mall shops to open. We then went to Old Navy for summer clothing deals and grabbed Chick-Fil-A lunch in the food court. A $2.00 carousel ride later, we ventured outside to get some sun.

We discovered a fountain at Mall of Georgia that had kids running and playing through the water. My girls were shy at first but after awhile they were soon soaked. And it was free entertainment in which they cooled off.

Today we venture back out to Buford to get a boat part for our pontoon and then I’m heading to Suwanee Town Park to visit Play Town and the free water fountain there. I will report on it later this week!
