Donate Canned Food to a Local Food Pantry

If you want to give regularly, sign up for Food for Thought Project. Fill your grocery cart with a few extra items each visit and fill the orange bag. On the pickup date which is a few times a year, simply place the orange bag on your porch by 9:00 am and it will be distributed to many local area food pantries. Volunteers are also needed to pick up donation bags as well as distribute canned goods from the warehouse to the local pantries.

Forsyth County Senior Services Seeks Holiday Gift Angels

Brighten the day of a local senior citizen this holiday season

Forsyth County Senior Services invites everyone to be a holiday angel to a local senior citizen by participating in the 2017 Holiday Gift Angels Program.

“The Holiday Gift Angels Program is a joy for Forsyth County Senior Services to host every year,” said Senior Services Director Ruthie Brew. “A gift from a stranger – however big or small – shows our seniors that they are thought of during the holiday season.”

Being a holiday angel is easy to do. Just follow these simple steps:

1.  Pick up a gift request tag at any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations (gift tags will be available beginning Thursday, November 2):

  • Center at Charles Place, 595 Dahlonega Street, Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Sexton Hall Enrichment Center, 2115 Chloe Road, Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Hearthstone Lodge Community Center, 7305 Lanier Drive, Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

2.  Acquire a gift. Each gift request tag lists the name of a local senior citizen along with a gift idea for him/her.

3.  Bring the unwrapped gift – in a gift bag with the gift request tag attached – to any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations listed above weekdays by November 27. For additional information, call Forsyth County Senior Services at (770) 781-2178.

Fire Department Annual Toy Collection – Help Brighten the Holidays for Local Children in Need

Be a part of the Forsyth County Fire Department’s 15th annual Aerial’s House toy collection! New, unwrapped toys for local children in need – newborn through 18 years old – may be dropped off from November 13 through December 15 at any Forsyth County fire station, Fire Department Headquarters (3520 Settingdown Road), or any of the county’s four library branches.To receive information regarding the distribution of toys collected through Aerial’s House, call The Place of Forsyth County at (770) 887-1098.

Deliver Meals to Seniors Through Meals on Wheels Program in Forsyth County, GA

The Meals on Wheels program delivers not only a nutritious meal but also a friendly visit to homebound seniors. Providing this important program wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated volunteers who pack and deliver the meals. Community Thanksgiving Dinners in Forsyth County, GA

Cumming First United Methodist Church – 770 Canton Highway (Hwy. 20 West) – their 16th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day at the church’s family life center. For those interested in eating or volunteering, visit the CFUMC website.

Chestatee Elementary SchoolCommunity Thanksgiving Dinner is on Tuesday November 22 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. The meal is open to anyone in the community. The teachers bring in food and the school has purchased 20 turkeys for the community. Located at: 6945 Keith Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30506.

Forsyth Fire Begins Aerial’s House Toy Collection for Needy Children in November

New, unwrapped toys for any age may be dropped off beginning Monday, November 9 and through Friday, December 11, at Forsyth County fire stations, the Fire Department Headquarters located at 3520 Settingdown Road, or any of the county’s four library branches.   Beginning in December and continuing through December 11, toys for Aerial’s House may also be dropped off under the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Forsyth County Administration Building, located at 110 East Main Street in downtown Cumming.   To receive information regarding the distribution of toys collected through Aerial’s House, call The Place of Forsyth County at (770) 887-1098.

Senior Services offers Home-Delivered Meals Gift Certificate Program

Help brighten the holiday season for Forsyth County homebound senior citizens by participating in the 2015 Home-Delivered Meals Holiday Gift Certificate Program. Meals purchased with a holiday gift certificate through Forsyth County Senior Services will be delivered through the Meals on Wheels program.

“The demand for our Meals on Wheels program continues to increase, and the cost of the meals continues to rise as well,” Senior Services Director Judy Theilman. “Forsyth County Senior Services is very appreciative of the generous support this program receives each year – it truly makes a difference in the lives of community’s homebound seniors.”

Those interested in participating may choose to provide meals for a day, week, month or year. The cost is $3.68 for one day, $18.40 for one week, $80.96 for one month, and $956.80 for the entire year. Gifts may be tax-deductible.

Forsyth County Senior Services invites everyone to be a holiday angel to a local senior citizen in need by participating in the 2015 Holiday Gift Angels Program.   “The Holiday Gift Angels Program is an annual program coordinated by Forsyth County Senior Services,” said Senior Services Director Judy Theilman. “It reminds our senior citizens that someone is thinking about them during the holiday season and really does have a tremendous positive impact on our seniors.”

Being a holiday angel is easy. The first step is to pick up a gift request tag for a senior citizen. The gift request tags are available now and can be picked up at the following Forsyth County Senior Services locations:

3 Days of Hope at North Lanier Baptist Church from November 12 – November 14, 2015

3 days of hopeFrom November 12 through November 14, North Lanier Baptist Church is hosting 3 Days of Hope for the community of Forsyth County and Cumming GA.

The three day event offers free services to the community such as a dental clinic, a coat closet, medical screenings, vision screenings, haircuts & manicures and car oil changes.

Donations for the coat closet are now being accepted at the NLBC welcome center no later than November 8, 2015.

Volunteers are also needed at this event!

Highlands Church Offers Free Shelter on January 23 and January 24, 2014

highlands church Highlands Church will be offering a warm place to stay this Thursday January 23 and Friday January 24 due to the freezing temps. If your heat goes out or you need a warm place to stay, they are opening their doors. They also seek donations of blankets and sleeping bags.

Highlands Church will be opening its doors, free, as a place for anybody who needs a warm place to sleep this Thursday and Friday night. It will be cold. If your heat is out, let us help. Please share so that as many folks know about this as possible.

Surf and Sun 5K and Fun Run in Cumming, GA on February 1, 2014

SurfandSun2014The second annual Surf and Sun 5K and Fun Run will be held at 8:30 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at West Bank Park, 3227 Buford Dam Road in Cumming, GA.

This annual event benefits Feed the Hungry Forsyth. It’s a beach party in the middle of Winter. Great custom awards to the Overall male & female as well as the top 3 in each of the normal 5 year age groups 10 & under through 65+. Great long sleeve tech shirts to all participants registered by 1/27/2014. All registrations afterwards will receive a shirt while supplies last.

There will be great prizes for the people with the best surf outfits, so raid your closets for the best summer and sun-inspired clothes that you’ve got!

Race Day Schedule:

 9:30 AM – Fun Run Start

Registration: The fee is $25.00 and you can register online. 

Feed the Hungry Forsyth, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit food rescue organization collecting bread, meats, and other foods that restaurants and other businesses would normally throw away and delivering to food pantries that provide food to the hungry in our community.

Book Drive & Literacy Event at Mia’s Pizza and Eats on September 23, 2013

mias pizza and eats reading eventMia’s Pizza and Eats, is sponsoring a community book drive through September 23, 2013 to benefit Literacy Forsyth and Isabelle’s Book Club, two Cumming based non-profits dedicated to improving literacy in the Forsyth community.

Additionally, Mia’s will host a “Reading Is So Delicious” celebration night on the evening of  Monday, September 23 from five to seven pm, with kids’ crafts, door prizes, and a heavily discounted menu to all who donate books that night.

Five local authors have also joined the celebration and will read and sign their books that evening:  Anna Lee Everhart, author of Beautiful Bear and His New Moves; Ann Linn, author of Drowsy Eels on Banana Peels; Priscilla Whitaker, author of Mr. Blue; Jackie Gaskins, author of The Four Princesses; and Randy Hardin, author of many books, including The Kudzu Monsters.

The organizations have requested new and gently used books, especially K-12 level.  Folks can drop off their new or used books at Mia’s Pizza and Eats on 911 Market Place Boulevard or at the Forsyth Family Center on 133 Samaratin Drive.
