Donate Canned Food to a Local Food Pantry

If you want to give regularly, sign up for Food for Thought Project. Fill your grocery cart with a few extra items each visit and fill the orange bag. On the pickup date which is a few times a year, simply place the orange bag on your porch by 9:00 am and it will be distributed to many local area food pantries. Volunteers are also needed to pick up donation bags as well as distribute canned goods from the warehouse to the local pantries.

Forsyth County Senior Services Seeks Holiday Gift Angels

Brighten the day of a local senior citizen this holiday season

Forsyth County Senior Services invites everyone to be a holiday angel to a local senior citizen by participating in the 2017 Holiday Gift Angels Program.

“The Holiday Gift Angels Program is a joy for Forsyth County Senior Services to host every year,” said Senior Services Director Ruthie Brew. “A gift from a stranger – however big or small – shows our seniors that they are thought of during the holiday season.”

Being a holiday angel is easy to do. Just follow these simple steps:

1.  Pick up a gift request tag at any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations (gift tags will be available beginning Thursday, November 2):

  • Center at Charles Place, 595 Dahlonega Street, Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Sexton Hall Enrichment Center, 2115 Chloe Road, Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Hearthstone Lodge Community Center, 7305 Lanier Drive, Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

2.  Acquire a gift. Each gift request tag lists the name of a local senior citizen along with a gift idea for him/her.

3.  Bring the unwrapped gift – in a gift bag with the gift request tag attached – to any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations listed above weekdays by November 27. For additional information, call Forsyth County Senior Services at (770) 781-2178.

Fire Department Annual Toy Collection – Help Brighten the Holidays for Local Children in Need

Be a part of the Forsyth County Fire Department’s 15th annual Aerial’s House toy collection! New, unwrapped toys for local children in need – newborn through 18 years old – may be dropped off from November 13 through December 15 at any Forsyth County fire station, Fire Department Headquarters (3520 Settingdown Road), or any of the county’s four library branches.To receive information regarding the distribution of toys collected through Aerial’s House, call The Place of Forsyth County at (770) 887-1098.

Deliver Meals to Seniors Through Meals on Wheels Program in Forsyth County, GA

The Meals on Wheels program delivers not only a nutritious meal but also a friendly visit to homebound seniors. Providing this important program wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated volunteers who pack and deliver the meals. Forsyth Fire Begins Aerial’s House Toy Collection for Needy Children in November

New, unwrapped toys for any age may be dropped off beginning Monday, November 9 and through Friday, December 11, at Forsyth County fire stations, the Fire Department Headquarters located at 3520 Settingdown Road, or any of the county’s four library branches.   Beginning in December and continuing through December 11, toys for Aerial’s House may also be dropped off under the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Forsyth County Administration Building, located at 110 East Main Street in downtown Cumming.   To receive information regarding the distribution of toys collected through Aerial’s House, call The Place of Forsyth County at (770) 887-1098.

Give the Gift of Meals to Local Seniors This Holiday Season

Senior Services offers Home-Delivered Meals Gift Certificate Program

Help brighten the holiday season for Forsyth County homebound senior citizens by participating in the 2015 Home-Delivered Meals Holiday Gift Certificate Program. Meals purchased with a holiday gift certificate through Forsyth County Senior Services will be delivered through the Meals on Wheels program.

“The demand for our Meals on Wheels program continues to increase, and the cost of the meals continues to rise as well,” Senior Services Director Judy Theilman. “Forsyth County Senior Services is very appreciative of the generous support this program receives each year – it truly makes a difference in the lives of community’s homebound seniors.”

Those interested in participating may choose to provide meals for a day, week, month or year. The cost is $3.68 for one day, $18.40 for one week, $80.96 for one month, and $956.80 for the entire year. Gifts may be tax-deductible.

Checks should be made payable to Forsyth County Senior Services, Holiday Gift Certificate Program and may be mailed or delivered to the following address:

“Christmas at the Movies” is a figure skating show, featuring local area skaters from The ICE, basic skills & figure skating programs, with a canned food drive benefitting St. Joseph’s food pantry.

Guest receive $1.00 off show admission by donating canned food items for St. Joseph’s food pantry at St Brendan’s Church, in Cumming, GA (www.stbrendansatl.com). About Charity: St. Joseph’s Food Pantry
Purpose -To serve the hungry in our community with a caring spirit and respect for their dignity.
St. Joseph Food Pantry has many volunteers, divided into teams with specific responsibilities.  The inventory team works on Monday adding new food donations to the pantry shelves.  Items are processed by marking bar codes, sorting by item and expiration date.  Many of the parish youth are involved in working in the Food Pantry and organizing food drives.  On Wednesday, the assembly team fills recyclable grocery bags for client distribution.  The shopping team coordinates with inventory to shop weekly for needed items.  The Food Pantry also has a client registration team that includes a bilingual person, financial and data input leaders as well as volunteer and visiting group coordinators.

Located at 1345 Atlanta Hwy, Cumming, GA 30040 is a year round ice skating facility.  Programs include Open public skating, Learn to skate program, Learn to play hockey program, Youth house hockey league, Adult stick time, Free style figure skating, Private skating lessons and training, as well as Party and meeting rooms for all occasions.

10:00 am – 12:00 pm – Michaels Kids Club. Kids, create a crafty handmade stocking for Christmas. Let your kids explore their creativity while you shop! Carmike Cinemas / Movies 400 announced its free summer movie schedule for 2012. Shows begin at 10:00 am every Tuesday and Thursday from June 5 – August 9, 2012. (Looking for free outdoor movies? Check out the Movies in the Park series coming to Forsyth County, GA.)

Bring a can of food and receive a free popcorn, limit one per person. Drinks and popcorn are $1.00. The movies are all either rated G or PG.

Last summer, the free movies at Movies 400 were extremely crowded. I recommend getting there at least 30 minutes before movie showtimes.

Moviegoers of all ages can climb aboard the Summer Movie Express to enjoy a great selection of films. During this 9-week festival, participating Regal Cinemas, United Artists and Edwards Theatres will offer selected G or PG rated movies for only a dollar on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:00. A portion of proceeds from the Summer Movie Express will be donated to the Will Rogers Institute.
