3:00 pm – 5:00 pm – Hoops for Horses at Save the Horses – Sophia wants to do something BIG for her 10th birthday to help make the world a better place. She decided to combine her love of horses, basketball and hoola-hoops to raise money for Save The Horses. This is an amazing organization that rescues abused, abandoned and neglected horses and other animals. Will you join on Sunday, November 12th for Sophia’s Hoops for Horses event? She has an afternoon of fun planned, including horseback riding, barn tours, a petting zoo, hoola-hoop dancing, a raffle and more! Tickets for activities and snacks will be sold at the event and will benefit Save The Horses. All activities will range from $1 – $5. 9:00 am – 1:00 pm – Family Promise Festival and Bed Race – The Bed Race & Festival will be held on Saturday, November 7th, at the Forsyth Central High School From 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM, Participants can arrive as early as 7:00 AM for setup. Visitors can vote (with their dollars) for the most original, and funniest beds. At 10:00 AM the actual races will begin and the skill and speed of the participants will determine the fastest entries. The money raised by each team will determine coveted Merit Award for Fundraising. Between the races and the judging of beds, visitors are encouraged to visit the various booths and help individual groups raise money. Those booths will also be eligible for prizes based on originality and fundraising achievements.

2:00 pm – Hampton Park Library. “Peace Pipes and Talking Leaves: Cherokee Leaders and Lore” Celebrate Native American Heritage Month featuring storyteller Barry Stewart Mann.

Help us celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a special visit from acclaimed storyteller, Barry Stewart Mann.  Through the voices of three historical figures — Sequoyah, inventor of the Cherokee syllabary; Nancy Ward, Beloved Woman; and Dragging Canoe, brave warrior — Barry will Cherokee folklore, customs, and history. Highlights include the creation myth cycle and the tale of the Healing Lake, the challenges posed by European settlement, and details of Cherokee Stickball, the Seven Clans, and the Green Corn ceremony. It’s an engaging, entertaining, and educational portrayal of a fascinating and noble nation. All ages are welcome! No registration required.

Friday, December 5 & Saturday, December 6 – MarketPlace Christmas – Celebration of Lights, Jingle Job and Christmas Parade – Start the weekend off on Friday at the Celebration of Lights at Northside Hospital – Forsyth with live entertainment from local schools and groups, children activities, photos with Santa and the lighting of the giant Christmas tree atop the hospital. Saturday participate in a short run/walk in the Jingle Jog 5K that takes you down Mary Alice Park Road and back to Market Place Boulevard. Then kick back and enjoy the season with your community, family and friends to cheer on the festive floats in the Cumming Christmas Parade.

9:00 am – 12:00 pm – Rivers Alive Cleanup – Mary Alice Park, Cumming, GA. Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB) is seeking volunteers to help clean local waterways. The 2013 Rivers Alive Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 9 a.m. and KFCB encourages families, scout troops and organizations to volunteer for the annual waterway cleanup event. Volunteer teams can register for the event by calling KFCB at 770.205.4573 or by sending an email to kfcb @ forsythco.com. The registration deadline is Tuesday, October 30. Volunteers will meet at Mary Alice Park (1820 Mary Alice Park Road in Cumming) at 9 a.m. on November 3 to gather supplies. 11:00 am – 6:00 pm – Quarter Midget Racing – Cumming Fairgrounds -The North Georgia Quarter Midget Association welcomes you and your family to come out and watch the races. Admission is free; we have concessions and plenty of excitement for the whole family. Quarter Midget Racing is a family oriented sport for children ages 5 to 16. Children race in Quarter Midget cars that are a scaled-down (approximately 1/4 scale) version of an actual midget-racecar on oval tracks that are approximately 1/20th of a mile.
