If you would like to give back this holiday season, here are a few local organizations that would love your help making sure families have a brighter Christmas.

Donate Canned Food to a Local Food Pantry

If you want to give regularly, sign up for Food for Thought Project. Fill your grocery cart with a few extra items each visit and fill the orange bag. On the pickup date which is a few times a year, simply place the orange bag on your porch by 9:00 am and it will be distributed to many local area food pantries. Volunteers are also needed to pick up donation bags as well as distribute canned goods from the warehouse to the local pantries.

Forsyth County Senior Services Seeks Holiday Gift Angels

Brighten the day of a local senior citizen this holiday season

Forsyth County Senior Services invites everyone to be a holiday angel to a local senior citizen by participating in the 2017 Holiday Gift Angels Program.

“The Holiday Gift Angels Program is a joy for Forsyth County Senior Services to host every year,” said Senior Services Director Ruthie Brew. “A gift from a stranger – however big or small – shows our seniors that they are thought of during the holiday season.”

Being a holiday angel is easy to do. Just follow these simple steps:

1.  Pick up a gift request tag at any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations (gift tags will be available beginning Thursday, November 2):

  • Center at Charles Place, 595 Dahlonega Street, Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Sexton Hall Enrichment Center, 2115 Chloe Road, Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Hearthstone Lodge Community Center, 7305 Lanier Drive, Open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

2.  Acquire a gift. Each gift request tag lists the name of a local senior citizen along with a gift idea for him/her.

3.  Bring the unwrapped gift – in a gift bag with the gift request tag attached – to any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations listed above weekdays by November 27. For additional information, call Forsyth County Senior Services at (770) 781-2178.

Fire Department Annual Toy Collection – Help Brighten the Holidays for Local Children in Need

Be a part of the Forsyth County Fire Department’s 15th annual Aerial’s House toy collection! New, unwrapped toys for local children in need – newborn through 18 years old – may be dropped off from November 13 through December 15 at any Forsyth County fire station, Fire Department Headquarters (3520 Settingdown Road), or any of the county’s four library branches.To receive information regarding the distribution of toys collected through Aerial’s House, call The Place of Forsyth County at (770) 887-1098.

Deliver Meals to Seniors Through Meals on Wheels Program in Forsyth County, GA

The Meals on Wheels program delivers not only a nutritious meal but also a friendly visit to homebound seniors. Providing this important program wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated volunteers who pack and deliver the meals. If you are looking for a way to truly make a difference in the community and brighten the lives of others, please consider becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Angels Over Forsyth

Sponsor a child who is in foster care this Christmas.  This effort is coordinated by Angels Over Forsyth, a community-driven, volunteer program which ensures these children have the best Christmas possible.  As the holiday season nears, Angels Over Forsyth is seeking assistance in making Christmas and the Holiday season brighter for foster children and families in need living in our community. We are in need of persons who can sponsor a child in need. We are asking that sponsors spend approximately $150.00 per child. Find out more information on the Angels Over Forsyth website.

October 21 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Forsyth County Trunk or Treat Safety Event at the Cumming Fairgrounds. Bring the whole family and have fun while learning how to stay safe this Halloween during the seventh annual Trunk or Treat Safety Event. The family-friendly event will be held at the Cumming Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is one family-sized bag of candy per family. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to Trunk or Treat, which will feature a variety of fun activities and games. There will also be information on costume safety, pedestrian safety, stranger danger, stop-drop-roll demonstrations and more.

October 28 from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm – Halloween Trick or Treat & Monster Mash Dance Off at The Collection Forsyth. Join the Monster Mash Dance-off, hang out at the Creation Station for fall crafting, costume parade, games, pizza from Mellow Mushroom, and Treats from our wonderful restaurants and retailers.

October 28 from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Fall festival at First Baptist Cumming. 1597 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, GA. Inflatables, cake walk, petting zoo, hay rides, giveaways, food, trunk or treat and more!

October 28 – 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Halloween Egg Haunt at Warbington Farms. Join “Count Cottontail” and the rest of the farm for a “Halloween Egg HAUNT” on Saturday, October 28, at Warbington Farms. The event is FREE WITH Fun Park admission ($12 per person)

October 28 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Forsyth County Parks & Recreation is hosting their inaugural Family Fun Fest and Haunted Trail on Saturday, October 28 at the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center. The free event will feature family crafts, games and nature-themed activities. Also included in the festivities will be a Halloween costume contest for all ages and a haunted trail for ages eight and up. The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., with the costume contest at 6:30 p.m. and the haunted trail beginning at 7 p.m. The Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center is located at 4075 Spot Road.

October 29 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Trunk or Treat at Midway United Methodist Church. Trick-or-treaters make the rounds in a parking lot full of cars with decorated trunks giving candy and other treats. Come earlier in the afternoon and visit our pumpkin patch at our historic chapel, where you can play games, listen to a professional storyteller share fall and kid-friendly Halloween tales, find a tasty treat at the bake sale, take your fall pics in a beautifully decorated spot, and buy pumpkins to take home for carving. October 29 from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm. Trunk or Treat at Christ Community Church – Fall is here and we are so excited for Fall Festival. LIBRARY EVENTS

The Cumming, Hampton Park, and Post Road branches will host Trick-or-Treat Storytime events October 26 through 31 featuring family-friendly Halloween stories, music, and activities. Children are invited to dress up and participate in a costume parade around the library as they trick-or-treat with library staff. Visit the library’s online event calendar for a listing of Trick-or-Treat Storytime programs.

After Halloween, come celebrate Latin American culture and El Día de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead, with storyteller Barry Stewart Mann at the Cumming Library on Thursday, November 2 at 6:30 p.m. This special One World Forsyth program will be hosted during the library’s regularly scheduled Twilight Tales storytime and is sponsored by FCPL Friends & Advocates, an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for library programs and materials through sales at the Friends Bookstores. Barry Stewart Mann’s captivating program includes a selection of stories and poetry from Mexico and across Latin America told in both English and Spanish.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS NEAR FORSYTH COUNTY

Trunk or Treat Dawsonville October 31 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Rock Creek Park, Dawsonville, GA – Come out to Rock Creek on Halloween 4:00-7:00PM to trunk-or-treat with your family! The purpose of this event is to provide the children in the community with a safe place to trick-or-treat. Rock Creek is a well-lit area that provides plenty of parking, restrooms, and easy access! We will designate a specific area in the park for the trunk-or-treat and have it sectioned off so that vehicle traffic will not be permitted, providing a traffic-free area for the children. Admission is free and so are most of the activities; concessions/dinner will be available for purchase. CANDY, treats/toys, promotional items/freebies, carnival games, bounce house, hay rides, face painting, MORE CANDY! Sorry, no pets (service animals only, please).

Trick or Treat Dahlonega – Ghosts, goblins, witches, wizards and more will be wandering the streets of Downtown Dahlonega on October 31st, 2017 at Trick-or-Treat Dahlonega. This event, brought to the community by the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Merchants, provides a safe environment for parents to bring children trick or treating during daylight hours. The event will take place on October 31st from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, rain or shine. Trick-or-Treat Dahlonega is intended for children ages 12 and under and appropriate costumes are appreciated! For safety reasons, the roads will be closed and re-routed during the event.

Cumming Country Fair and Festival from October 5 – October 15, 2017

cumming country fair 2016A benefit of living in Cumming, GA is experiencing the wonders of a small town while still being able to visit the big city of Atlanta.

The Cumming Country Fair & Festival at the Cumming Fairgrounds is one of those wonders and it runs from October 5 – October 15, 2017.

October is a fun time of year in Forsyth County as it becomes a destination for many people in the metro Atlanta area that seek out country fair and festival fun in North Georgia.

There are lots of special promotions and coupons running for the fair and lots of entertainment schedule for the event.

What are your tips for people new to the Cumming Country Fair? Since it has gotten more crowded over the years, my tip is to go during the weekday afternoon if you can. We have gone during lesser crowds and with younger kids, it has been a less stressful way to go!

Pumpkin Patches In and Around Forsyth County, GA in 2017

pumpkin patches in forsyth county gaBelieve it or not, Fall 2017 pumpkin season is here in North Georgia! Here are a few neat places to pick a pumpkin in and around Forsyth County, GA.

For years, we have been going to Kinsey Family Farm in Forsyth County, GA to pick out our annual pumpkin. Unfortunately, the Kinsey Farm was hit pretty hard by Irma, so please check their website and FB page for their open times.

The farm features hayrides, barn animals and catfish to feed in the pond among other fun things. There are picnic tables if you would like to bring a picnic lunch. Sample their caramel apples or boiled peanuts (available after 10/1.) They also have a 25,000 square foot nursery and during the holidays you can pick out a Christmas tree and enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows.

The farm is open every day in October and features a wide variety of pumpkins as well as apples, gourds, corn stalks, indian corn, straw bales, and much more. Check out their fall harvest shop and pick up some apples, salsa, jam, honey, breads, preserves and much more!

Our Independence Day Celebration begins on July 3rd from 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 pm with various vendors including food and drink, inflatables for kids, music, wonderful fireworks display along with an all-ages dance contest at 8:30 pm with fireworks following at 9:30 pm.

Bring your blanket, set out on the lawn and enjoy the festivities. There is no admission or parking fee for the July 3rd celebration!

On July 4th, come and enjoy the famous Steam Engine Parade beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Parade will include steam engines, antique tractors, antique cars and many other floats decorated in the spirit of the holiday. TIPS: It can be loud – you might want ear plugs for the littles. It can be hot, bring lots of water. Bring a bag to collect candy!

The Collection Forsyth Free Summer Concert Series 2017

free summer concert series at the collection forsythFree outdoor concerts are fun for the entire family. Concerts at The Collection Forsyth is slated to start Thursday, June 8 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm through July 20. The concerts run every Thursday throughout the summer.

Bring a blanket and enjoy some great music from local artists while enjoying the outdoors. There are also kids activities starting at 6:00 pm and music from 7:00 – 9:00 pm so the whole family can have fun!

THE COLLECTION AT FORSYTH HOSTS 6thANNUAL SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

June 8 – July 20 

The Collection at Forsyth, Cumming’s premier outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment destination, will host its sixth annual summer concert series, which will occur every Thursday from June 8 – July 20, 2017. In honor of the event’s sixth anniversary, The Collection is expanding the festivities to include more concerts and family-friendly activities like scavenger hunts, face painting, food tastings, Pose & Post contest, Father’s Day celebration, giveaways and discounts at several participating stores and restaurants.

Concerts at The Collection will feature the following artists:

•       June 8 – Last Five Standing

•       June 15 – Adam Komesar

•       June 22 – Lance Price Band

•       June 29 – Lilac Wine

•       July 6 – Adam Komesar

•       July 13 – Cole Thannish

•       July 20 – James Patrick Morgan

Each concert evening will begin at 6 p.m. with children’s activities and restaurant sampling, and the live music will occur from 7 – 9 p.m. Listeners are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs and relax in the center of The Collection, or enjoy the music while shopping or dining on one of The Collection at Forsyth’s restaurant patios.

The Collection will host its first “Restaurant Mix & Mingle” during the concert series this year. Participating restaurants will provide tastes and sips for listeners at the event. Attendees will enjoy samples from Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Grub Burger Bar, Marlow’s Tavern, Mellow Mushroom, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Tin Drum Asian Kitchen.

Attendees will have access to concert night specials at a selection of restaurants and retailers, including Chick-fil- A, Claire’s, Grub Burger Bar, Lavender Boutique, Marlow’s Tavern, Pure Barre, Springfree Trampoline and Tin Drum Asian Kitchen.
