Spring Break 2017 Activities in Forsyth County, GA

Spring break is here! If you are having a staycation, there’s lots of fun things to do in and around Forsyth County, GA. Here are a few local things – please comment & share if you have any ideas for other families as well.

Forsyth County Library – the library has a whole week planned including a viewing of Moana and a Polynesian hula party at the end of the week! See their spring break lineup here – just select your library.

Michaels – Michaels has kids crafts during the week to add to your child’s creativity and give you new ideas for crafting! Here is a listing of the Spring MAKE camp for this coming week.

There are also a few Spring Break camps at Sweet & Sassy and the City of Cumming and Forsyth County.

Spring break camps offered for ages 4 to 15

Forsyth County Parks & Rspring break camps cumming gaecreation is offering half-day and full-day spring break camps this year. The camps vary in location and theme and are offered for children ages 4 through 15, Monday, April 3, through Friday, April 7.

The half-day camp options at Old Atlanta Park – located in the southern portion of the county – include a drawing and painting camp for children ages 4 to 6 and a Minecraft-inspired engineering adventure camp for children ages 6 to 11. Sawnee Mountain Preserve – located in the northern portion of the county – will play host to two full-day camps, an outdoor exploration camp for children ages 6 to 8 and an outdoor adventure camp for children ages 9 to 15. The times and registration fees vary by activity.

“Forsyth County Parks & Recreation is offering a variety of youth camps this spring break – with activities that include everything from painting to science to zip-lining,” said Parks & Recreation Director Jim Pryor. “With daily, week-long camps, children have more opportunity to engage with their peers, learn new skills and make life-long memories.”

Spring Break Events at the Forsyth County Libraries

If you’re planning a staycation for spring break, make sure your plans include the Forsyth County Public Library. With more than three dozen programs and events on the calendar for kids and teens – plus a few more activities for grownups – you’re sure to find something to keep the family entertained.

Author & Illustrator Visit

Joey Weiser, author and illustrator of the Mermin graphic novels and contributor to SpongeBob Comics, will read an excerpt from his work and give a drawing demonstration to students in grades 3 through 6. The event will be held at the Hampton Park Library on Wednesday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. and advance registration is requested.

Movie Screenings

Come to the library and watch a movie on the big screen in surround sound. See Disney’s Winnie the Pooh (2011, Rated G) at the Cumming Library at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4. Bring your own little minions to the Minions (2015, Rated PG) Movie Parties at the Post Road Library on Wednesday, April 6 at 1:15 p.m. or the Sharon Forks Library on Thursday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. Fans of Peter Pan should bring a picnic lunch, blankets, and pillows to the Post Road Library at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, April 8 for the Pan (2015, Rated PG) Family Movie Picnic.

Character Visits, Animals, and Puppet Shows

Beloved children’s book character Pete the Cat will appear at each library branch during spring break for “I Like My Stories: A Groovy Pete the Cat Storytime.” We’ll read Pete stories, sing songs, make cat-tastic crafts, and even enjoy a visit from the famous cat! Pete the Cat will appear at the Cumming Library on April 7, at the Hampton Park Library and the Sharon Forks Library on April 8, and at the Post Road Library on April 9.

Love butterflies? There are two opportunities to learn all about them this month! First visit the Post Road Library on Monday, April 4 at 11:15 a.m. for “Monarchs and Milkweed” to get a preview of the library’s Monarch caterpillar enclosure and learn about their life cycle and migration. Elementary-aged students can also make a butterfly craft and plant butterfly-friendly seeds in the library’s garden. Then, visit the Hampton Park Library throughout the month of April to watch a group of caterpillars transform into butterflies.

Go “Batty About Bats” as you meet different species of bats and learn about their habitats with wildlife educator Vicky Beckham Smith. The program will be held on Monday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon Forks Library and at 2:30 p.m. at the Hampton Park Library.

Puppetpalooza, an over-the-top series of puppet shows, will also be held at each library branch throughout the week.

Touch a Truck & More Family Fun

Trucks and other vehicles from the Forsyth County Fire Department and Sawnee EMC will be on display for kids of all ages at the Post Road Library on Tuesday, April 5 from 1:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. After exploring the vehicles, stop inside the library to make a things-that-go craft.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will also visit the Cumming Library on Monday, April 4 at 3:15 p.m. to discuss Stranger Danger with kids ages 4 to 8.

Crafty kids ages 9 to 12 can learn to crochet and knit some simple, colorful projects to keep at Kids Crochet at the Cumming Library on Tuesday, April 5 at 2:00 p.m. Elementary school students in grades 3 through 5 should stop by the Cumming Library again on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. to make a disaster preparedness kit with the American Red Cross’s Pillowcase Project sponsored by Disney.

Get in the rhythm with “Drumming for Success” with Dr. Arvin Scott at the Hampton Park Library on Tuesday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m. This program is part of the One World Forsyth series sponsored by the FCPL Friends & Advocates and will offer participants of all ages an opportunity to try out different percussion instruments and learn basic drum patterns.

Like Minute to Win It? Bring your game face and see if you can do wacky stunts like balancing a stack of dice on a popsicle stick at the Minute to Win It Challenge at the Sharon Forks Library at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.

The library will remain open on a regular schedule during Forsyth County School’s spring break. Digital materials, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, music, and videos, are available to library cardholders 24/7 in the eLibrary.

Spring Break Events at the Forsyth County Public Library

To all the Forsyth County parents stressing about what to do with the kids over spring break, take a deep breath, relax, and then prepare to fill up the calendar. The Forsyth County Public Library has your family covered all week long with activities for babies, preschoolers, school-aged kids, and teens, too.

Puppet Shows

Spring Break week kicks off at the Post Road Library on Saturday, April 4 with a special One World Forsyth performance by The Center for Puppetry Arts. Two free performances will be given at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. to celebrate Diversity in Action Day (Dia!). Families and kids of all ages will learn about different puppet traditions from around the world, participate in the puppet show, and make a puppet or other Dia crafts. Space is limited to 100 seats per show, so arrive early to claim a spot.

Puppetpalooza takes the stage at the Cumming Library on Tuesday, April 7 at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. The show travels to the Sharon Forks Library on Wednesday, April 8 at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. There will be three Puppetpalooza performances at the Post Road Library on Thursday, April 9 at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1:15 p.m. The show will also be presented at the Hampton Park Library on Thursday, April 9 at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Storytime

The library’s newest program, Sensory Storytime for Children with Special Needs, will be held at the Sharon Forks Library at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4.

Books and Babies, a weekly early literacy program for babies up to 24 months old, will continue its regular schedule with meetings April 6 – 9. Check out www.forsythpl.org for specific times at each location and to register.

Wendy Bennett, a 20-year veteran of the Woodruff Arts Center’s Young Audiences program, will present “Storytime Alive” at all library branches during spring break. Through music and movement, Wendy will help kids figure out how characters make their way from the pages of children’s literature to the Broadway stage. Wendy’s musical theatre draws on examples from well-known children’s favorites in a fun, interactive program for all ages. Wendy will perform at the Post Road Library on Monday, April 6 at 1:30 p.m.; at the Hampton Park Library on Monday, April 6 at 4:00 p.m.; at the Cumming Library on Tuesday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m.; and at the Sharon Forks Library on Tuesday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m. This program is sponsored by the FCPL Friends and Advocates.

Children in grades K though 2 are invited to read The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers and join the Chatterbooks book club at the Hampton Park Library on Wednesday, April 8 at 4:30 p.m. for crafts, activities, and a discussion of the book. Advance registration is requested.

Young readers will not want to miss “A Doggone Storytime Featuring Biscuit.” It will be a barking good time filled with great stories, fun music, and a special puppet show. Be sure to bring your cameras and snap a picture with Biscuit. A Doggone Storytime will be presented at the Cumming Library on Thursday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m.; at the Hampton Park Library on Friday, April 10 at 11:15 a.m.; at the Sharon Forks Library on Friday, April 10 at 2:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.; and at the Post Road Library on Saturday, April 11 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. This program is sponsored by the FCPL Friends and Advocates.

Animal Adventures

Take a trip to the rainforest without ever leaving the library! On Monday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m., Wildlife Wonders will bring live, exotic rainforest animals to the Cumming Library. Zookeepers will introduce a variety of animals that live in the rainforest, from the canopy to the damp, spongy forest floor. All ages are welcome.

Whooo loves owls? Everyone! And you can meet live owls from the Thompson Raptor Education Program at the Post Road Library on Friday, April 10 at 11:15 a.m. All ages are welcome to learn about these amazing feathered creatures, the wisest of the carnivores.

Fire Safety & Touch-a-Truck

Firefighters from the Forsyth County Fire Department will visit the Sharon Forks Library on Monday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. to help kids learn the basics of fire safety. After the program, kids will be able to touch and explore a real fire truck outside the library.

Children will also learn the dangers of fire, the importance of fire safety, and what to do in case of a fire at home with a tour of the Fire Safety House. The program will be held at the Cumming Library on Friday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m.

Stop by the Post Road Library on Tuesday, April 7 at 1:15 p.m. to see a variety of vehicles including fire trucks, police cars, a recycling truck, and even a Sawnee EMC cherry picker – that’s a special truck with a long arm for lifting people and equipment up to high power lines.

Movies, Music & Parties

Put on your best pajamas and come out to the Sharon Forks Library on Monday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. for a very special version of our weekly PJ Storytime: PJ Dance Party! You’ll be jammin’ in your jammies to all your favorite songs. This event is fun for the whole family and all ages are welcome.

Puppy lovers of all ages should head out to the Hampton Park Library at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8 for a special screening of the Disney classic 101 Dalmatians.

Kids who love dressing up as pirates and fairies should put on their costumes and visit the Post Road Library for a special Pirate and Fairy Party on Wednesday, April 8 at 1:15 p.m. Pirates and fairies in grades K through 5 will make magic wands, pirate accessories, sand art, and more. At 2:00 p.m., they can settle in to watch the newest Tinker Bell movie The Pirate Fairy. Please register to attend the Pirate and Fairy Party.

On Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30p.m. you’re invited to the Hampton Park Library to celebrate the birthday of our favorite doggy friend, Memphis! Join in wishing him a howlin’ good birthday by making a special card and reading him your favorite book. All ages are welcome and advance registration is requested.

The Sharon Forks Library is now ready to screen movies! Come out for a special Red Carpet Movie Premiere at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9 and you can be among the first to see The Lego Movie (rated PG) at the library. Lego creation stations will be available during and after the movie so elementary school students can create their own Lego masterpieces.

Kids ages 8 and up are invited to the Cumming Library on Friday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. where they can whip up their own sticky, slimy “flubber” and then watch the 1997 film Flubber starring Robin Williams.

Legos & Games

Get out to the Hampton Park Library for an afternoon of BIG fun at the Big Game Day on Tuesday, April 7 at 11:00 a.m. Families and kids of all ages can play giant versions of games like Jenga, Memory, Checkers, and more.

Have a builder in the family? Build something independently, with a family member, or with other kids using Legos and building blocks at the Hampton Park Library on Friday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. This Busy Builders program is open to all ages.

Tweens & Teens

Like art? Tweens in grades 4 through 8 should stop by the Hampton Park Library on Tuesday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. for SmartArt for Tweens and explore printmaking, portraits, sculpture, and photography (bring your own camera). The group will learn about such artists as Hokusai, Rembrandt, Cameron, and Degas. Advance registration is requested.

Teens planning to babysit over the summer should participate in the Babysitter’s Toolkit seminar at the Cumming Library on Wednesday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. The program will focus on safety and early literacy, then participants can decorate a tote bag to take on babysitting jobs, create flyers to promote their services, create emergency contact lists, and learn how to select great books to read aloud to children. This program is for grades 6 and up, and advance registration is required.

Think you know pop culture, history, science, music, sports, or literature? Come on out to the Cumming, Post Road, and Sharon Forks Libraries on Wednesday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. and you can play team trivia against teens at the other locations via Skype. This event is for middle and high school students.

Martial Arts, Stranger Danger & Self-Defense

The Post Road Library has partnered with Pro Martial Arts to host a series of interactive classes on stranger danger, handling bullies, building confidence, and basic self-defense.

On Sunday, April 12 at 2:15 p.m. preschoolers will experience the Armor Method of recognizing stranger danger that will leave them smarter, not scared. Kids ages 3 to 5 should register to attend.

At 3:00 p.m., elementary school students will use the Armor Method to recognize bullies, defend themselves, carry themselves with confidence, and stop the cycle of bullying. Kids in grades K though 5 should register to attend.

At 3:45 p.m., middle and high school students will learn basic self-defense skills and use the Armor Method to stay safe and get themselves out of scary situations. Students in grades 6 through 12 should register to attend.

Carrington Academy offers spring break and summer camps. Our camps offer fun filled programs for children ages 5-12. 9:00 am – 12:00 pm – Home Depot Kids Workshop – Build a Birdbath/Birdfeeder from the new FOX film, “Rio 2”, in theaters April 11.

10:00 am – 12:00 pm – Michaels Kids Club – Works of whimsy! Kids, create an original painting on canvas. Join us on Saturday, April 5th, for our Whimsical Works of Art Event. Ages 3 and up are welcome to this event. Let your kids explore their creativity while you shop! Only $2.00 per child reserves 30 minutes for your creative kid. 10:00 am – Pike Nurseries Class – Garden experts will host a Growing Great Tomatoes seminar. Participants will learn key planting and care tips as well as the many tomato varieties that are best suited for their garden.

11:00 am – Barnes & Noble story time. It’s bath time, and Pigeon won’t go willingly! Join us April 5 at 11:00 am for a reading of The Pigeon Needs a Bath!, followed by more stories and pigeon activities.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm – Post Road Library Saturday Family Story Time and visit with Curious George. Start your weekend off right at the Post Road library. We’ll have stories, dancing, and fun! This storytime is for children aged 4-8 but bring the whole family!

11:15 am – 11:45 am – Saturday Story Time at Cumming Library. This storytime includes books, music, and activities. It is designed for ages 4 – 8, but the whole family is welcome to attend.

2:00 pm – Pike Nurseries Class – Grow Your Own Salsa Garden class, where gardeners and at-home chefs alike learn not only how to grow all of the ingredients for salsa, but also how to use their harvest in a custom recipe! Whether customers prefer heirloom tomatoes or cherry tomatoes, Pike Nurseries always offers fresh advice for harvesting homegrown tomatoes – ripe for the picking!

2:30 pm – 5:00 pm – Forsyth County Senior Services Spring Concert for all ages at the Sexton Hall Enrichment Center, 2115 Chloe Road in Cumming. The Sounds of Sawnee Concert Band will perform as part of the ongoing concert series hosted by Senior Services. The cost is $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Refreshments are included in the concert admission price.

Friday and Saturday

Multi-Family Yard Sale – Donut Connection parking lot. Come check out our vast array of items. At least 4 families are bringing treasures to sell. Lots of household items, clothing, books, record albums mainly from the 70s, cookbooks, tools, children items, knick knacks and much more. Opening at noon on Friday April 4th. Saturday, April 5th we will be opening at 8am. Will be set up in the gravel parking lot at Donut Connection on Keith’s Bridge Road in Cumming. Hope to see you there!!

SPRING BREAK SKATEBOARD CAMP | Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, if you love skateboarding or have always wanted to learn, this camp is for you! Participants will learn basic skills, skating games, etiquette/safety and equipment mechanics. Participants will be in groups based on age and skill level.
