Forsyth County Library Summer Reading Programs 2016

forsyth county ga summer reading program

The Forsyth County Public Library and its Summer Reading sponsor, FCPL Friends and Advocates, reward children and teens who set and reach a summer reading goal with a free book. All registered Summer Reading participants will also be entered in raffle drawing for several grand prizes.

Readers up to grade 5 will be entered to win a Family Fun Pack, graciously donated from Stars & Strikes. Readers in grades 6 to 12 will be entered to win a gift card and basket from AMC Theatres. Adult readers will be entered to win an Apple iPad mini.

To earn a free book, or win a raffle drawing, patrons must be registered for the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Registration opens on the last day of school, Friday, May 27, and patrons can register online or in-person at any Forsyth County Public Library branch through July 31.

Families should also mark their calendars for the Summer Reading Kick-Off Carnivals, says Bradley.

“The Carnivals are among our most popular events all year. Based on patron feedback, this summer the Post Road and Sharon Forks Libraries will combine their events at the Forsyth Conference Center, where there is ample parking and sidewalks on the surrounding streets for families that prefer to walk.”

The combined Summer Reading Kick-off Carnival will be held on Tuesday, May 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd. Participants can register for the Summer Reading Program, play carnival games, and watch balloon artists twist balloons into wild animals and zany objects. Lew-E the Clown will also give two performances of “READ-O-LYMPICS,” an exciting magic show and storytime for children of all ages.

The Cumming Library will host a Carnival for its patrons on Wednesday, June 1 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the Hampton Park Library will host its Summer Reading Kick-off Carnival on Thursday, June 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Both events will include carnival games, balloon artists, and two performances from entertainer Todd Key. His show, “Cirque du Todd: The Flying Debris Extravaganza Juggle-Palooza,” combines juggling, circus skills, magic, and just the right mix of comedy and reading encouragement for children of all ages.

“Our summer reading theme this year is On Your Mark, Get Set…READ!, so we’ll be encouraging families to make sports and physical fitness part of their summer routine,” adds Bradley. In addition to providing books, magazines, and digital materials on health and wellness, the Library will offer programs for teens and adults on cooking and eating healthfully on a budget. The full slate of summer programming for children, teens, and adults will be announced shortly.

Patrons are encouraged to check the Library’s online event calendar at www.forsythpl.org to view programs by age group or by location. Printed Summer Program Guides will also be available at each library branch starting May 15.

8:00 am – 3:00 pm – American Girl Yard Sale – 7510 Fields Drive, Cumming, GA 30041. This is a friend’s garage sale and it is one of the best that I have ever seen! Huge garage sale with a lot of American Girl items to sell! Almost all of the American Girl items are new in boxes. Literally hundreds of items to sell including clothing, books, furniture, and accessories that were purchased new at an American Girl warehouse sale. We also have a number of American Girl Dolls that were purchased at the Children’s Museum Benefit Sale. These dolls are like new, but have a small “x” (the size of a small ant) on their bottom (see pictures of one of the dolls). They are a great deal and awesome for children to play with, but I wouldn’t recommend them for doll collectors. We should have hundreds of items for sale, but limited quantities!!! We will also have a limited number of Ivy dolls available (again, with the small “x”, but they also have a small green stain on one of their legs from the dye of her green pants . . . most cloths and tights cover this blemish). We also have lots of children’s clothes, toys and books. We’re also selling many designer brands of clothing and shoes for children and adults.

Summer Reading Programs 2015 at Forsyth County Public Library

summer reading program at forsyth county librarySummer is almost here and the Forsyth County Public Library launches their SUPER summer reading program on May 22, 2015!

SUMMER OF SUPERHEROES BEGINS WITH KICK-OFF CARNIVALS

Registration for a summer of super reading fun is set to begin on Friday, May 22 at the Forsyth County Public Library. The following week, each branch will host its own Super Summer Reading Kick-Off Carnival featuring Cameron’s One Man Circus, face painting, balloon art, and carnival games. The FCPL Friends & Advocates have also donated AMC movie gift cards to be raffled off at each carnival event.

The first Carnival will be held at the Cumming Library on Tuesday, May 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Hampton Park Library will host its Carnival on Thursday, May 28 and the Post Road Library will host its Carnival on Friday, May 29. Due to very large crowds, the Sharon Forks Library will be hosting its Carnival on Wednesday, May 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

“This year’s Summer Reading Fun program is focused on heroes – both the superheroes we see in comics and fiction and the everyday heroes we meet in our community,” says Laura Bradley, Program Manager.

Library patrons may register for the summer reading program between May 22 and July 31 online at www.forsythpl.org, at the Kick-off Carnivals, or at any library branch. A record-breaking 5,600 patrons participated in last year’s summer reading program and more participants are expected to register this year.

Patrons who participate in Summer Reading Fun will be rewarded with an automatic entry in raffles at each branch. The youngest participants, up to preschool-age, will be entered to win a superhero kit with a cape. Readers in grades K through 5 will be entered in a drawing for a $25 Lego gift card. Teens in grades 6 through 12 have a chance to win an iPad Mini and adults have a shot at taking home a Kindle Fire HDX at the end of the summer. Winners will be drawn and notified at the conclusion of Summer Reading Fun in early August. In addition, participating adults are eligible for weekly raffles at each of the branches all summer long. All children and teens who set and meet a summer reading goal will receive a free paperback book donated by the FCPL Friends & Advocates.

But more important than prizes is the vital support the program offers to help students maintain and even improve their reading, writing, and vocabulary skills over the summer break, says Bradley. The library’s Youth Services staff have been visiting local schools and community groups to share the excitement about becoming a super reader this summer.

“This year’s set of comic book-style themes is expected to draw in even the most reluctant readers. Children will learn that ‘Every Hero Has a Story.’ Teens will ‘Unmask!’ and adults will ‘Escape the Ordinary.’ We’ve planned nearly 500 events and storytimes to capture our patrons’ imaginations and encourage them to check out books to read at home,” says Bradley.

The number of programs represent a 64% increase over the already record-breaking summer of 2014. Events this summer will feature comic book artists, authors, magicians, puppeteers, storytellers, live animals, comedians, musicians, artists, movies, workshops, trivia contests, and more.

Library staff will also present a series of superhero-themed storytimes. Super Sidekicks (2-5 years), Caped Crusaders (4-7 years), and Superhero STEAM Camp (3rd-5th grade) programs will be offered at each branch, along with the library’s popular Books & Babies storytime for children under 24 months old.

For a complete listing of events for children, teens, and adults, please pick up a Summer Reading Fun Program Guide at your local branch or visit the library’s online calendar at www.forsythpl.org.

Studies show that reading during school vacation helps maintain and even improve reading skills. The summer reading program is a powerful tool that parents can use to help ensure their children read during the summer months, which will also help prevent an academic summer slip.

Summer reading registration begins on Friday, May 23, 2014 for children, teens, and adults. Patrons may simply visit the library’s website to register or may visit any of the library branches.
Children and teens will be encouraged to set a reading goal for the summer when they register for the programs. They may record their progress throughout the summer online or by using a free reading log they will receive at registration. Children and teens will have until August 2, 2014 to meet their reading goals and to claim their rewards. Each child or teen who meets his or her summer reading goal will receive a free paperback book, donated by the Forsyth County Public Library Friends & Advocates.
Adults who register for summer reading will automatically be entered to win an Amazon gift card! They will also be able to record their reading online all summer long.
Also check out the Forsyth County Public Library’s events calendar for lots of fun free things to do this summer. The FCPL offers story times, magic shows, free movies and much more.
